Our concept for this project adapts the original Shakespearean work to explore social constructs like gender and heteronormativity. It also pulls from Disco and Glamrock aesthetics, which largely influence and are influenced by LGBT+ culture. Such a project aligns well with the Unity Theatre Collective Mission statement. Seeking to cast LGBT BIPOC individuals will open the door to many marginalized individuals.
The projected outcomes for all participants, audiences, and community partners will be to create representation for marginalized youth. We share it to inspire insight and empathy.
Unity Theatre Collective's mission statement discusses fostering insight and empathy and making theatre for every person. A huge part of this casting process has been an attempt to maintain that mission statement. We are moving towards those goals. By providing inclusiveness within our casting.
